Design

Design is a topic that causes worry for some but Hilary's approach as a college lecturer and maker is one built on her own experiences of learning over many years and uses methods that are planned with the finished textile in mind.
In particular it can be difficult to work from your own photographs when they seem to be complete so starting with a copy and random bits and pieces can help to break the barriers.
This is how I start the process. The next stage is to draw from the collage and finally begin to move into textiles and stitch.

This collage uses a photograph that Hilary took traveling in Barbados combined with dried palm leaves and stitched with grasses to create an atmosphere.

The drawing made from the collage helps to fix the design in Hilary's mind as she works the stitched piece.
